Minutes to Decimal Hours Chart (0–59)
Each value is the number of minutes divided by 60, as a fraction of one hour. Values such as 10 ÷ 60 repeat, so 0.17 hours is a rounded display, not an exact replacement for 10 minutes. For a weekly total or a pay estimate, add the original minutes first and round only at the stage your workflow requires.

How to Use the Time to Decimal Calculator
Keep the whole hours as they are and divide the minutes by 60.
Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
So 15 minutes is 0.25 of an hour, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75.
That makes 7 hours 30 minutes 7.5 decimal hours and 8 hours 45 minutes 8.75 decimal hours.
Some minutes do not divide evenly. For example, 20 minutes is 0.3333… of an hour.
Therefore, 6 hours 20 minutes is approximately 6.3333 decimal hours, or 6.33 when rounded to two decimal places.
The calculator shows up to four decimal places. The full chart under the calculator shows four decimal places and the two-place rounding.
Decimal to Time: Convert Decimal Hours to Hours and Minutes
Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60.
For example:
8.75 decimal hours = 8 hours + (0.75 × 60 minutes)
Answer: 8 hours 45 minutes.
When the result is not a whole number of minutes, the calculator rounds to the nearest minute.
For example, 7.33 decimal hours is approximately 7 hours 20 minutes.

Why Payroll Uses Decimal Hours
Timesheets commonly record worked time in hours and minutes, but calculating pay requires a numerical representation of those hours.
For example:
An employee works 7 hours 30 minutes at an hourly rate of 18.00.
First, convert the worked time into decimal hours:
7 hours 30 minutes = 7.5 decimal hours.
Then multiply by the hourly rate:
7.5 × 18 = 135.00 estimated gross pay.
Payroll systems can differ in the number of decimal places they retain and when they apply rounding.
Check the requirements of your payroll system or employer. The example above represents gross pay before tax and deductions.
Common Time Conversion Mistakes
Mistake 1: Reading 7.30 as 7 hours 30 minutes
7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 decimal hours.
However, 7.30 decimal hours equals 7 hours 18 minutes.
Mistake 2: Reading 8.45 as 8 hours 45 minutes
8 hours 45 minutes equals 8.75 decimal hours.
However, 8.45 decimal hours equals 8 hours 27 minutes.
Mistake 3: Rounding every day’s hours before adding them
Five days of 6 hours 20 minutes equals 31 hours 40 minutes.
That is approximately 31.6667 decimal hours.
If you round every day to 6.33 before adding them, you get 31.65 instead.
Add the original minutes first and round once, at the stage your payroll system requires. Values such as 0.17 for 10 minutes are rounded displays, not exact replacements; the full chart lists both.
Converting Time to Decimal in Excel or Google Sheets
Spreadsheets store time values as fractions of a day.
If cell A2 contains 7:30, you can convert it into decimal hours with:
=A2*24
The result is 7.5.
To round it to two decimal places:
=ROUND(A2*24, 2)
To convert decimal hours back into a spreadsheet time value, divide by 24.
If B2 contains 7.5:
=B2/24
Format the result as time.
For totals exceeding 24 hours, use the custom format [h]:mm so that 38 hours 20 minutes does not display as 14 hours 20 minutes.
