Use this overtime calculator to work out overtime pay from your hourly rate and overtime hours. Enter your regular hours, base rate and overtime hours, then choose time and a half (1.5×), double time (2×), a custom multiplier or an exact overtime rate. You see regular pay, overtime pay and total gross pay, with hours entered in hours and minutes so 45 minutes is never mistaken for 0.45 hours.
How to Calculate Overtime Pay
Overtime pay is your overtime hours multiplied by your overtime rate. The overtime rate is your base hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier.
- Overtime rate = base hourly rate × overtime multiplier
- Overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate
- Total gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay
Example: you work 46 hours in a week at $20 an hour, and hours over 40 are paid at time and a half.
| Line | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Regular pay | 40 hours × $20.00 | $800.00 |
| Overtime rate | $20.00 × 1.5 | $30.00 an hour |
| Overtime pay | 6 hours × $30.00 | $180.00 |
| Total gross pay | $800.00 + $180.00 | $980.00 |
To check it in the calculator above, choose Enter hours, enter 40 regular hours and a $20 base rate, open the overtime section, choose 1.5× and enter 6 overtime hours.
Time and a Half Calculator
Time and a half means each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times the base rate. Double time is 2 times the base rate. This table shows the overtime rate for common hourly wages.
| Base rate | Time and a half (1.5×) | Double time (2×) |
|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $22.50 | $30.00 |
| $16.00 | $24.00 | $32.00 |
| $17.00 | $25.50 | $34.00 |
| $18.00 | $27.00 | $36.00 |
| $20.00 | $30.00 | $40.00 |
| $22.00 | $33.00 | $44.00 |
| $25.00 | $37.50 | $50.00 |
| $28.00 | $42.00 | $56.00 |
| $30.00 | $45.00 | $60.00 |
| $35.00 | $52.50 | $70.00 |
For any other rate, multiply by 1.5 or 2, or enter the rate in the calculator and choose the multiplier. If your overtime rate is set as a fixed amount rather than a multiple, choose Exact overtime rate and type it in.
Overtime Hours and Minutes
Overtime is often a number of hours plus minutes, and minutes are not decimals: 3 hours 45 minutes is 3.75 hours, not 3.45. At $30 an hour, 3 hours 45 minutes of overtime is 3.75 × $30.00 = $112.50. The calculator takes hours and minutes separately and converts them for you.
| Overtime worked | Decimal hours | Pay at $30.00 an hour |
|---|---|---|
| 0:15 | 0.25 | $7.50 |
| 0:30 | 0.50 | $15.00 |
| 0:45 | 0.75 | $22.50 |
| 1:20 | 1.33 (1⅓) | $40.00 |
| 2:30 | 2.50 | $75.00 |
| 3:45 | 3.75 | $112.50 |
For other minute values, see the minutes to decimal hours chart.
How Many Overtime Hours Did You Work?
Overtime hours are the hours above a threshold. A weekly rule counts hours over a set number in the week (for example, over 40). A daily rule counts hours over a set number in a day (for example, over 8). Some workplaces use both.
| Day | Hours worked | Over 8 in the day |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | 10:00 | 2:00 |
| Tue | 8:00 | 0:00 |
| Wed | 9:00 | 1:00 |
| Thu | 8:00 | 0:00 |
| Fri | 7:00 | 0:00 |
| Week | 42:00 | 3:00 |
With only a weekly rule of 40 hours, this week has 2 overtime hours. With a daily rule of 8 hours, it has 3, because Monday and Wednesday ran long even though the week is close to 40. With both rules on, an hour is counted as overtime only once, so the week has 39 regular hours and 3 overtime hours.
If you have clock-in and clock-out times rather than totals, enter them in the Timesheet on the Work Hours Calculator. Set your daily threshold, weekly threshold or both, and it splits each day into regular and overtime hours. Its button for the Salary Calculator carries the regular and overtime split across, so you do not retype them.
Overtime Pay for Common Weekly Hours
These examples use a $20 base rate, overtime after 40 hours in the week and time and a half ($30 an hour). No other pay or deductions are included.

| 42 | 2 | $60.00 | $860.00 |
| 44 | 4 | $120.00 | $920.00 |
| 45 | 5 | $150.00 | $950.00 |
| 48 | 8 | $240.00 | $1,040.00 |
| 50 | 10 | $300.00 | $1,100.00 |
| 55 | 15 | $450.00 | $1,250.00 |
| 60 | 20 | $600.00 | $1,400.00 |
Which Overtime Rule Applies to You?
SumHours does not decide which overtime rule applies to you. The threshold, the multiplier and which hours count can depend on your employer, your contract and where you work. Use the rule that applies to your workplace; your employer, union or local labour authority can confirm it.
Overtime pay here is gross pay, before tax and deductions. To see a simple take-home estimate, add your own estimated deduction percentage in the calculator. It is a mathematical estimate, not tax, payroll or legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply by the overtime hours. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27.00 an hour, so 5 overtime hours pay $135.00.
How do I calculate double time?
Multiply your hourly rate by 2, then by the double-time hours. At $20 an hour, double time is $40.00 an hour, so 3 hours pay $120.00.
How many overtime hours is 45 hours a week?
With a 40-hour weekly threshold, 45 hours is 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. With a daily threshold as well, the answer depends on how long each day was.
Can I calculate overtime from clock-in and clock-out times?
Yes. Enter the times in the Timesheet on the Work Hours Calculator and set your overtime thresholds. It splits each day into regular and overtime hours, which you can then use to calculate pay.
Can I use a custom overtime multiplier?
Yes. Choose a custom multiplier such as 1.25× or 1.75×, or enter an exact overtime rate if your overtime is paid at a fixed amount.
Does the calculator include taxes?
No. It shows gross pay. You can add your own estimated deduction percentage for a simple take-home estimate, but it does not calculate income tax or statutory deductions.
