Use this clock in calculator and punch-time calculator to total clock-in and clock-out periods, calculate hours worked, check when you can leave, and find what time to clock back in after lunch. Add multiple punches for split shifts or unpaid breaks.
What Can This Clock In Calculator Answer?
- How many hours did I work? Add every clock-in and clock-out pair and get the total worked time.
- What time can I leave? Enter your punches and required work time to see how much time remains.
- What time do I clock back in from lunch? Enter when lunch started and the break length to calculate your return time.
- How do split shifts affect my total? Add each separate punch period; gaps between punches are not counted as work.
How to Use the Clock In Calculator
Enter each clock-in and clock-out pair from your workday. Add another punch whenever you clock out and later return.
SumHours totals only the time between each clock-in and clock-out pair. Gaps between punches, such as an unpaid lunch break, are not counted as worked time.
Example:
- 8:00 AM to 12:10 PM = 4 hours 10 minutes
- 12:40 PM to 4:30 PM = 3 hours 50 minutes
- Total worked time = 8 hours
The 30-minute lunch gap is automatically left out because you were clocked out during that period.
Multiple Clock-In and Clock-Out Times
You can enter several punch periods in the same workday. This is useful for lunch breaks, split shifts or any day when you leave work and later return.
| Clock In | Clock Out | Worked Time |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 AM | 11:00 AM | 4:00 |
| 11:30 AM | 3:00 PM | 3:30 |
| 3:15 PM | 5:00 PM | 1:45 |
| Total | 9:15 | |
That is 9 hours 15 minutes, or 9.25 decimal hours.
When Can I Leave Work?
Open the When can I leave? section when you know how many hours you need to work.
Choose a target such as 8, 10 or 12 hours, or enter your own target. The calculator uses your completed punches to show:
- hours already worked
- remaining work time
- your expected clock-out time
Example:
- 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM = 4 hours already worked
- Current clock-in = 12:30 PM
- Target = 8 hours
- Remaining = 4 hours
- Expected clock-out time = 4:30 PM
The lunch gap is not counted as worked time.
Lunch Return Time Calculator
The Lunch return time helper answers a common question: What time should I clock back in?
Enter the time you clocked out and choose your break length. Quick options include 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes.
Example:
- Clocked out: 12:10 PM
- Break: 30 minutes
- Clock back in: 12:40 PM
Clock-In Calculator for Overnight Work
The clock in calculator also handles punch periods that cross midnight.
Example:
- 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM = 4 hours
- 2:30 AM to 6:30 AM = 4 hours
- Total worked time = 8 hours
When a clock-out time is earlier than its matching clock-in time, SumHours treats the clock-out as occurring on the following day.
Clock-In Hours and Decimal Hours

Frequently Asked Questions
What time should I clock back in after a 30-minute lunch?
Add 30 minutes to the time you clocked out. If you clock out at 12:10 PM, return at 12:40 PM.
How do I know what time I can leave work?
Enter your completed punches, open When can I leave?, choose your target work hours and enter your current clock-in time. SumHours calculates your remaining work time and expected clock-out time.
Does lunch count as worked time?
Not when you are clocked out. The time between one clock-out and the next clock-in is excluded from your worked total.
Can I enter more than one clock-in and clock-out time?
Yes. Add another punch for every additional period you worked. SumHours adds the completed punch pairs together to calculate your total worked time.
Can the Clock In Calculator handle overnight work?
Yes. If a clock-out time is earlier than its matching clock-in time, the calculator treats the clock-out as occurring on the following day.
What time do I clock out if I start at 8 AM and need to work 8 hours?
If you work eight hours continuously, you would finish at 4:00 PM. If you take an unpaid break, the finish time moves later by the length of that break.
For a start-time-plus-break calculation, use the Shift Calculator.
What time do I return from a 45-minute lunch?
Add 45 minutes to your lunch clock-out time. For example, leaving at 12:00 PM for a 45-minute lunch means returning at 12:45 PM.
Is this the same as a time card calculator?
It can total individual punches for a workday. For a complete weekly or biweekly time card, use the time card calculator and open its Timesheet view.
