About SumHours

SumHours is a free set of calculators for adding up working time: the hours between two times, weekly and biweekly time cards with unpaid breaks, clock-in punches, overnight shifts, time to decimal conversion and an estimate of gross pay. There’s no account, no sign-up and nothing to install.

Who SumHours is for

  • Employees and hourly workers checking a time card before handing it in, or checking that a payslip matches the hours they worked.
  • Employers, managers and small business owners totalling a week of shifts, or checking a timesheet before running payroll.
  • Payroll and admin staff converting hours and minutes to decimal hours.
  • Freelancers and contractors adding up billable time.
  • Students with campus jobs filling in timesheets around classes.

Why we built it

Hours are where pay starts, and small mistakes add up: an overnight shift counted as negative time, a lunch break taken off twice, 7:30 typed as 7.30. We built SumHours so employees and employers get the same total from the same times. Every calculation works in whole minutes and converts to decimal hours only at the end, so a week’s total doesn’t drift.

How we keep the numbers right

Every formula this site uses is published, along with the automated tests that check it, on our methodology page. The test count shown there comes from a real, automated run, not a number we typed in. Rounding is off unless you turn it on, and when it’s on, the unrounded total stays visible next to the rounded one. If a result ever looks wrong, tell us the times you entered and we’ll check it.

Your entries stay with you

SumHours runs in your browser. What you type isn’t sent to or stored on our server. Optional analytics cookies are used only if you allow them, and the calculators work either way. Details are in our privacy policy.

What SumHours isn’t

SumHours is not payroll software, not tax advice, and not legal advice. It calculates the hours and, when you enter a rate, the estimated gross pay before tax and deductions, for the times you type in. It doesn’t store your data, connect to your payroll system, or tell you what you’re legally owed.

Who runs SumHours

SumHours is an independent website run by the SumHours team, founded by Suleman Ahmed. It isn’t affiliated with any payroll or time-tracking company. Questions, suggestions and correction requests go to contact@sumhours.com or our contact page.
